RuneScape Private Server Types Compared

RuneScape private server labels describe either a game era or a playstyle. Understanding both helps you avoid joining an active server that delivers the wrong combat, pace, or progression.

Game eras: OSRS, Pre-EOC, and EOC

OSRS servers use Old School RuneScape as the primary reference, usually with recognizable combat, interfaces, bosses, raids, and equipment. Pre-EOC servers recreate periods before Evolution of Combat and may reference revisions such as 317, 474, 508, 614, or 667.

EOC and RS3-style servers use later ability-based combat or modern RuneScape systems. Revision numbers and labels are not guarantees of completeness, so check which quests, bosses, skills, and interfaces are actually implemented.

  • OSRS: Old School mechanics with faithful or custom progression.
  • Pre-EOC: classic eras before ability-based combat.
  • EOC or RS3: later combat abilities, interfaces, and content systems.

Combat focus: PvP and PvM

PvP servers emphasize PKing, wilderness fights, combat presets, tournaments, clans, and quick access to competitive gear. They often reduce skilling requirements so players can build accounts and enter fights quickly.

PvM servers emphasize bosses, raids, gear upgrades, collection logs, and group encounters. Compare encounter variety, drop progression, difficulty, and whether content requires teams or supports solo play.

Economy and Ironman servers

Economy servers make trading, skilling, resource value, item sinks, and long-term progression important. Lower or moderate rates can make achievements meaningful, but shop design and donation benefits may influence the economy more than the advertised XP multiplier.

Ironman servers or modes restrict trading and make players earn supplies and equipment themselves. Check support for standard, hardcore, ultimate, or group Ironman, along with any modified drop rates and mode-specific rewards.

Custom and semi-custom RSPS

Semi-custom servers retain a familiar RuneScape base while adding selected quality-of-life features, bosses, zones, or items. Fully custom servers may introduce original equipment tiers, interfaces, currencies, skills, maps, and progression loops.

Custom does not describe quality or difficulty. Review screenshots and details to see whether additions are coherent and whether the early, mid, and late game provide a progression path you want to follow.

Choose by era, activity, and pace

Pick the era first because it determines combat and the basic game feel. Then choose the activity you expect to spend most time on: PvP, PvM, economy, Ironman, skilling, or custom progression. Finally compare XP and drop rates.

Use category rankings to compare similar servers by player votes. Read two or three profiles inside the category before following an official link, because many servers fit more than one label.

Common questions

What is the difference between OSRS and Pre-EOC servers?

OSRS servers reference Old School RuneScape, while Pre-EOC servers usually target older main-game eras before Evolution of Combat. Their content, interfaces, and revision style can differ.

Can one RSPS have several types?

Yes. A server can be OSRS-based while focusing on PvM, economy, Ironman, or custom content. Read the profile instead of relying on one label.

Which RSPS type is best?

There is no universal best type. Choose the era, main activity, and progression speed that fit how you want to play.
